This project will analyze the process of legitimizing governance during the transitional phase between colonial state and independent republics in Latin America. In a comparative and micro historical study we are examining the establishment of a new normative order in collaboration with the indigenous population that made it possible to justify a republican form of government. Focus is laid on the mediation and implementation of republican values and political culture in the periphery of Mexico and Chile.
